About the project
I am intrigued by the role that sound plays in our perception of environments, particularly in how we constitute "place". My model of investigation is built around "the sounding", a concept which transforms "sound" from noun to verb, in order to emphasise the active process by which we create a place anew, each and every time it is encountered.
This project is based around a residency at The Guesthouse, in Shandon, Cork. I wish to thank everyone at The Guesthouse, along with the Arts Council and Cork City Council, for their generous support.
I wish to explore local sounds through those who know it best, the people of Cork. I am asking residents to share a secret place, a special sound, or a favourite story. Participants will be encouraged to listen in new ways, to place new value on the sonic in relationship to other sensory modalities, and to realise that their own activities are connected to a larger community of listeners.
Each sound walk will be recorded. From these personal journeys I will build a shifting sonic sculpture of Cork, a montage of overlapping subjectivities, presented as an evolving installation and also perhaps a fixed composition. That is yet to be fully decided, since I will choose a form best suited to the fruits of this exploration... whatever they may be.
This website allows the process to reach a larger audience. It will be updated continuously throughout the project, forming a diary or log. Here you will find photographic and textual documentation to supplement the sound recordings.
The first stage of Sounding Cork is taking place from 16-30 May 2015. But I expect to be working on various apects of the project, including composition, writing, and post-production, throughout the calendar year.
